Antique French
Porcelain S. Marti Cherub Mantel Clock Garniture Set Rare
Yellow Color 19th Century

Antique French porcelain 3 piece cherub garniture clock set.
Movement stamped “S. Marti et Cie Medaille de Bronze” in a
circle. Samuel Marti was awarded the Bronze Medal in 1860. The
movement and original pendulum are both incised with matching
low production serial number 2383.

Samuel Marti et Cie were well known clock makers in Paris in
the mid eighteenth century. In 1860 it's known that their
premises were situated at Le Pays de Montbeliard and in 1863
Marti worked with two other well known clock maker's Roux, and
Japy Freres in promoting their clock movements.

The clock set is done in a rare light yellow color and creamy
white. The flowers and gold gilting are hand painted the
cherubs appear to be transfers. The porcelain is free of
chips, cracks and repairs, but the porcelain is heavily
heavily crazed having vertical, horizontal and circular craze
lines throughout. I unscrewed the garniture lids and inspected
inside to make sure the craze lines were not cracks. I found
three areas were the paint has flaked off: side base on one
garniture; same garniture above the cherub scene on upper
left; and back of clock case along top left edge. The
beautiful hand painted musical scene dial is in remarkable
condition free of chips, cracks or hairlines. Most dials are
chipped by the winding arbors and have lots of loss to the
paintings and numbers as well as hairline cracks.

The clock stands 10 1/2" tall, is 9 3/4" wide and 4 1/2" deep.
The garnitures stand 12" tall, are 4 3/4" wide and 3" deep.
The clock movement is an 8 day time and strike that chimes on
a coil gong every half and full hour. The clock keeps perfect
time. It will need to be leveled and adjusted after shipping.
