Antique French Second Empire Ormolu Gilt Bronze Cherub Cupid Clock - Signed Japy Fils 1855

Adorable ormolu gilded bronze and black slate French Cherub/Cupid clock. The cherub/cupid holds a bow and arrow ready to target its next victim of love. Not often does an Antique French clock with the cherub/cupid love theme come on the market. The metal is made of bronze, Not a spelter/white metal material, and retains most of it gilding. The clock stands almost 14 1/2" tall, is 8 1/4" wide and 4" deep. The case is made of black slate and shows it passage through time having the normal age related nibbles. The narrow black slate panel on the back is cracked, but does not show from the front. The French “Japy Fils” brass wheel balance movement is of high quality. The movement is stamped “JAPY FILS EXPO’S 1855 MEDAILLES 1844 1849” by the French Japy Family clock maker in a circle and incised with the production serial number 689. The back plate of clock movement is also stamped by the French Retailer “GARDIEN & CHERON PARIS” in an oval. The Japy family was awarded the gold medals in 1844 and 1849, and the Grand Medal of Honor at the Paris Exposition in 1855. The Japy Family were very important French clock makers. The movement is an 8 day time and strike that chimes on a bell every half and full hour. The clock has been serviced by a professional clock-smith and keeps perfect time when back elevated higher than front. The pendulum may be a replacement noting that it does not have the movement numbers 689 impressed in its bob. Not sure if the key is original.
